Summer Residency Programme 2008

Commencing Monday 28th May for 4 weeks, SSW is delighted to welcome 7 new artists in residence. Further information from the artists, including gallery pages and journals will be on-line as the residencies progress.

Laurence Kavanagh (UK) is an artist and curator based in London. His practice develops through research and response to location, incorporating elements of cinema and architectural space. While at SSW he aims to explore Scottish film archives and the work of architect Archibald Simpson. Recent shows and curatorial projects include, The Music of the Future, Gasworks Gallery, London; Wider than the Sky (curated by Lizzie Carey Thomas), Spitalfields, London; Premio del Golfo, La Spezia, Italy; Corpa Nova, London. Recent awards include the British School at Rome Derek Hill Foundation Scholarship, and Arts Council grants.

Kerry Morrison (UK) is an environmental artist who works within the public realm. She creates work in response to environmental issues within a given locale and global context, often working in collaboration with ecologists, environmental scientists and conservationists. At SSW she will be developing a new commission in partnership with the PVAF conference in October 2008. Recent projects include Temporaere Gaerten, Aachen, Germany, 2008, Rumlingen Sound/Environment Festival, Switzerland, 2007,  “Urban Nature” commission, Greenwich Peninsula, I.P. Peninsula Project, London. 2007.

Maria & Natalia Petschatnikov (Russia/Germany) are identical twins who work collaboratively, evolving ideas through discussion and observation. They experiment with material and process, producing work that plays with humour and irony, and that explores notions of ‘truth’, ‘manipulation’ and ‘fiction’ in science and communications. .
Graduates of Rhode Island College in Providence, RI, USA (BFA) and Hunter College of the City University of New York, USA (MFA), they work internationally, and are represented by Herrmann and Wagner Gallery, Berlin.

Kevin Reid & Graeme Roger (Scotland, based Glasgow and Elgin) have worked together on and off for over 4 years as ROGER & REID. Their performance work evolves from a shared interest in oddballs and outsiders, childrens TV and historical anomalies, psychotropic adventures and temporary utopias. Previous solo and joint projects include exhibitions at Spike Island, Bristol in 2004, 2nd floor contemporary gallery, Memphis September 2005, Next Wave festival, Melbourne, 2006, PS1, New York, 2004, SAC Amsterdam residency 2006, Embassy Gallery, Edinburgh January 2007.
At SSW they will be developing new work for an exhibition at Peacock Visual Arts, Aberdeen in 2009.

Zoha Zokaei (Iran, based London) graduated with a Master of Fine Art Degree in Textiles from Goldsmiths College, London in 2007. Her work investigates the boundaries and limitations of the physical body, separated and isolated from the mind, an interest arising from having to cover her body as a young child as if it is a ‘precious treasure that needs to be hidden from the eyes of the evil’. Her recent works are performance-based video installations, in which she utilises materials such as dough, latex and balloons as part of surreal and exuberant experiments that encourage participation from the viewer.
