Facilities

Studios and Library
SSW has a large communal studio space at the heart of the building. There are large tables. plinths and a drawing desk, and artists are welcome to make this space their own during their residency. Alongside this are work spaces in fabrication and the workshops, as well as outdoor spaces. All residents are welcome to use the Communities Room for activities and projects, and study in the Bothy for quiet working.

As your home, you are welcome to use all communal spaces as you wish, and they are accessible 24/7. The library has a good range of books, and you are welcome to take these into the studios, we just ask that you please do not take the books off-site. There is also a Mac desktop and Mac Mini for residents use.

Accommodation
SSW has accommodation on site as well as a house 500 yards into the village. On site are four bedrooms, two single and two twin, with shared bathrooms. The main kitchen is housed in the Bothy, which also has washing utilities and a small study room.

No. 17, the house in the village, also has four bedrooms, two double rooms, one twin and one family room with a shared bathroom. There is also a kitchen at the house, although residents may choose to use the kitchen at the main site also.

SSW is self catering accommodation and we have well equipped kitchens with the usual appliances, including microwave, fridges, freezer, electric hobs and ovens. The bothy also has a dishwasher.
New additions to the SSW facilities include the sauna and a fire pit with a stone circle.

Local Facilities and Amenities
SSW is based in a rural village, which has a population of around 300. It is along the main road of the village, with a pub (opening hours 4 – 8pm Monday to Thursday, later at weekends) and a garage, which stocks the basics (milk, bread etc).  There is also an village hall which hosts a number of events such as Fish & Chips, Movie Nights and ceilidhs. These are the only shops and facilities in the village. Off the main road is lovely countryside and some really nice walks, with old bothy’s to visit and plenty of sheep and cows to say hello to. If you are a keen walker, this is a great place for you to stretch your legs. SSW also have two bikes that residents can borrow to get around.

Alford is the nearest town, approx. 9 miles south, and in the opposite direction is Huntly, which is 15 miles north. There is a bus that goes to both Huntly and Alford. Huntly is slightly larger than Alford, and this is where the main transport comes into (bus and train). There are two large supermarkets, several shops and pubs. It is also the home of Deveron Arts, which is a socially engaged arts organisation that often has events and artist talks.
