Alternative Firings focuses on outdoor, experimental firings, giving innovative and unusual finishes to ceramics. Participants will learn how to glaze and decorate bisque-fired work and prepare it for firing using a range of techniques.

Learn how to load a gas-fired raku kiln and try out different reduction techniques. Prepare a saggar to fire in the raku kiln, creating exciting fume effects and learn how to prepare and fire a barrel kiln using terra sigillata for a variety of smoke finishes. Together participants will build a paper kiln and discover how to create a simple, effective method for decorating work, easily achievable at home.

There will be some blank pieces available for anyone who wishes or does not have their own bisqued work. Participants are welcome to bring several of their own bisque-fired pieces to fire using the above techniques. These will be fired at the course leader’s discretion and we cannot guarantee that all pieces will be included in firings.
