This one-day course offers an introduction to the basic technical aspects of blacksmithing. Participants will learn how to make a fire poker from a piece of mild steel square bar which they can take away with them at the end of the day. Through making the fire poker participants will be introduced to a diverse range of blacksmithing techniques including drawing out, hammering and bending as well as how to use and regulate a forge.

Course content:

  • Induction to forge safety rules and guidelines for personal protection
  • Demonstration of techniques and tools used with the forge and anvil
  • Initial try outs of the basic techniques
  • Design plan and formation of the fire poker
  • Finishing
  • Technical supervision and support throughout

Wear warm work clothes – forge work is outdoor. Overalls, boots, gloves and personal safety equipment will be provided and must be worn as directed, at all times. (Please bring your own steel toecap boots, overalls or fine particle masks if owned)
