Bronze introduction weekend

This weekend course offers the opportunity to learn about mould making techniques through creating a low relief plasticine pattern and from this develop a simple sand mould. Participants will then go on to learn multiple piece mould making, bronze chasing techniques including polishing and cutting and an introduction to basic patina.

Participants will be given the opportunity to assist in the bronze pour and there will be a demonstration of other casting materials including green sand, petro-bond and a brief introduction to lost wax casting.

The course costs cover tuition, materials, consumables and full foundry personal protective equipment (PPE) will be provided.   

Course Content:

  • Induction to foundry rules and guidelines for personal protection and safety
  • Initial ideas discussed and designs of moulds planned
  • Moulding and coring
  • Preparation of sand moulds and running systems
  • Preparation of furnace and participants induction for pour
  • Bronze pour
  • Opening of moulds
  • Removal of the running system and finishing of the bronze cast
  • Full technical direction and supervision throughout

Plasticine, resin bonded sand, LG2 bronze and all other consumable materials are inclusive in the course cost.

Additional Information:Warm work clothes must be worn. Overalls, steel toecap boots and personal protection equipment will be provided and must be worn as directed, at all times. (Please bring your own steel toecap boots, overalls or fine particle masks if owned) Bring any personal design work, ideas or objects with you which can be incorporated into the cast if suitable.

*Self – catering accommodation so remember to bring food, basic provisions can be bought at the village garage. Bring a packed lunch if you are a non-resident.
