Euan's Final Pour

Euan Ogilvie rounds off his technical placement as Eden Jolly’s assistant at SSW with a flourish. This afternoon Euan cast his own work for an exhibition he has coming up at the Glue Factory in Glasgow on the 13th of July, for the last metal pour of his placement here at SSW, so if you are in Glasgow on the 13th be sure to check out the fruits of his labor! Visiting Artist Bronwen Sleigh also helped with the pour, with […]

Junior Ceramics Art Club

We had an action-packed afternoon yesterday of clay throwing and tile-making at the Junior Ceramics workshop at SSW! Led by ceramics artist Beth Bidwell and assisted by intern Jennifer Argo the group first made up some designs for their tiles then imprinted their designs into the clay tiles or moulded forms which they then placed onto their tiles, and glazed the finished work creating brightly coloured final designs. They also tried their hands at clay throwing in our ceramics workshop with […]

All Hands On Deck at the SSW Foundry

Our team of resident technicians and artists all mucked-in at the SSW foundry on Monday to aid resident artist and technical ceramics placement, Kevin Morris, in his first attempt at bronze casting. Our Senior Technician Eden Jolly and technical assistant Euan Ogilvie used a flame-thrower to melt the wax out of molds Kevin has been working on over the last week. As this went on, the rest of us melted the bronze ready to be poured into the molds, each […]

Margaret Stewart, Communities Art Officer for Aberdeen City council gave a visit to SSW yesterday to deliver a short presentation on the goings-on at the Seaton Group, a community-orientated group who have been creating artistic public interventions in the Seaton area of Aberdeen. The talk also coincided with the birthday of local resident and SSW advocate Mrs Petrie who celebrated her 82nd birthday at the workshop yesterday! SSW staff surprised Mrs Petrie with a cake and flowers after the talk. […]

Coast Festival 2012

Ceramics by the Sea Shore – Paper Kiln Firing On the morning of the 26th of May we travelled up Banff Castle Grounds to set up for the paper kiln demonstration we would be doing that day. We began setting up at 10am and gathered interest from the public early on. We were joined by Phil from Gray’s School of Art, and began construction, by making two simple stick “teepees” on top of steel grates, which were tied at the […]

Lady Bronze

It was a monumental occasion yesterday as Ana & Co made the finishing touches to her bronze sculpture, which has been an on-going project here at SSW for the past year. A good start to 2012!

1982

Eden passed on images of iron pours from as far back as 1982 and this one I thought was very appropriate for the time of year.

A Continuous Process

As a first post for the SSW blog I have selected a few images from Sunday’s demonstrations by local talented artists, crafts people and tradesmen. It was a privilege to meet the artisans and observe their ease around the materials. They will be here again this Sunday (18th) to continue the process as part of The Lost Hand Programme running during NEOS at the Scottish Sculpture Workshop. The images include a Specialist Painter, a Stone Mason, a Cooper, a traditional […]
