Chris Barr // Profile
Many of my works have been motivated by the question of what might remain of painting once the act of 'seeing into' it is abandoned and in turn how artistic gestures might aim to establish 'matter as fact', where materials seemingly generate their own representation without mediation. The formal solutions dictated by materials have an important role to play in my practice, particularly when the suggestion of an encoded meaning forces a conflict between an ideal and an actuality. The way in which art forces us to question the hierarchical values of the real is one of the reoccuring themes that have formed the basis of my ongoing research. At best, my work deliberatly confuses painterly and sculptural space in order to re-negotiate the status and validity of familiar codes and signs. The quasi-pictorial nature of the work allows for functional origins to be preserved, creating a tension between crafted and manufactured objects within the overall formal solution of the artwork itself. In this sense I believe abstraction can be seen as a simple metphor for transformation where objects, pictorila space and even architectural idiosyncrasies can be seen within a different register of vaule. Chris Barr lives and works in Bristol.
