The last week
So now we are in the last week, no longer will I be a full time artist, but part time office worker and part time artist. I wanted I to shake up my practice whilst here and it seems that I am in the process of doing just that. I have learnt so much, not only about process but also relating to intellectual concerns behind my practice.
I finally finished making a scaled up plughole cast out of aluminium, which installed in one of the derelict houses that abound. It was initially what I thought was a small project to learn the process of casting metal and working in the foundry… days later it is finished and installed. I was aiming to create the feeling of the whole house imploding on itself as alongside the death element, the feeling that nature always reclaims its ground is prevalent. I was also referencing the cover of Mary Douglas’s book ‘Purity and Danger” where plug hole symbolises the place where “all margins are dangerous.” To a certain degree it works, it is an interesting way of working where the whole house becomes the piece of work. One of the problems is that it is a static piece and I am beginning to realise how important movement is to aspects of my practice.
Being here is like throwing a stone into water the ripples created now are substantial but they keep on emanating from the source and I will feel the effects in my practice on an ongoing basis.
