Our Pigs..our life..our perogative!
Hello thought I should write a journal as everything speeds up to the inevitable gala climax most other G.hutters are working really hard…my back is goosed! An old injury that happened 7 years ago while I stupidly lifted an 8x4ft 18mm MDF board length wise…anyway this means my building duties are down to a minimum and to be honest there’s enough testosterone kicking about the red shed with Steve and Jase to start a small war! More pressing matters have clouded my haar mind recently that of the eminent pig cull!! Yes brain and Davey are to meet their maker on Thursday. I spent the past few weeks trying to source the perfect kill. Preferring it to be onsite as I’ve heard horror stories about abattoir…the mobile slaughter man for this area sadly past away recently (maybe a disgruntled sow?)…So vets were contacted. Local organic farmers. But it looks like the more historical route has to be taken…. After negotiations with the dudes at SP, I have been assured that my pigs will be treated with the utmost respect and they’re going to do them in a one-day turn around. They even suggested I could go see a pig being killed to see the process was correct and quick…so the boys are away Thursday to the Butchers Friday… They’ll hang over the weekend then G. Barber master butcher in Alford is letting us go in of an evening an butcher them up into the required cuts…The whole pig rearing is definitely One of the highlights of my life. I really enjoyed seeing them grow and looking after them, clearing poop, sweeping out the house, hanging out in their pen. Its been fun, laughter, pain, tears and joy. Some people min the village have taken a ridiculous stance on the whole pig rear. Thinking its no cool to have pigs for eating and to give them a great life. Their not even veggies these people but narrow minded troglodytes content with not seeing the face of what they eat. They want their food clean, wrapped, pumped full of preservatives, colours, water and chemicals and flown 10,000 miles to their table. Well they can have that if that’s what they want. G’s dad told me the pigs aren’t pets when I first got them and he was right. Last night when I pierced their lugs with GHUT tags I felt good about the whole process. They were great when they were in their field and they’ll be great in our bellies. Brian & Dave, GANGHUT will miss you. One Love. Your in our hearts! REIDO x
