Newfoundland Residencies - Part Two commences

Artists Steven Anderson, Stuart Fallon and Mairi Lafferty return from Venice to Scotland for the second part of the first Newfoundland residency programme.
Newfoundland is a pilot programme of residencies for contemporary visual artists, developed and delivered through a partnership between SSW and Hospitalfield.
The Newfoundland programme exists to encourage artists to explore new territories, transforming local into global networks and research into process.
In partnership with Hospitalfield in Arbroath, and Dundee University Exhibitions programme, SSW was delighted to welcome three artists, Steven Anderson, Stuart Fallon and Mairi Lafferty, back to Newfoundland following a month-long residency in Venice as part of the Scotland & Venice invigilation team.
Based at the Scotland & Venice palazzo, where Martin Boyce's exhibition 'No Reflections' is being shown, the artists were given the brief of establishing collaborative networks with other international artists who were also part of the temporary community living and working in Venice to support the Biennale.
Each artist was asked to invite another artist back to Scotland for a month long residency at Hospitalfield House in Arbroath, throughout November 2009.
Steven Anderson invited Singaporean artist Kent Chan to join the residency for a month, Stuart Fallon invited Amy Pettifer and Sarah Gillett from London, and Izati Ngaliman, also based in Singapore, to do a series of mini-residencies, and Mairi Lafferty invited Deborah Bower and Matt Flemming, both film-makers based in the North East of England.
The residencies have now culminated in an exhibition at The Lower Foyer Gallery at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design in Dundee, to coincide with the return of the Martin Boyce exhibition to Dundee Contemporary Arts. The artists have worked on a series of talks, screenings and other events to support the exhibition at Duncan of Jordanstone, which opened on 4th December, and will run until 27 January 2010.
