The studios and resources are accessible 24hrs. The workshop facilities are accessible while the Senior Technician is onsite. For use outside these hours please check and adhere to the SSW Workshop Rules of Use.
SSW has a large shared main studio space, as well as work space within the Ceramics Studio, Communities Room and Fabrication Room.

Wood and Metal
SSW provides a range of tools and equipment for most wood and metal working needs. Technical guidance is on hand for all equipment and a full induction is given to all artists. Please contact us to discuss your specific needs.

SSW has a newly developed ceramics studio, with a good selection of tools and a good stock of materials for most ceramic process (i.e. hand building, slip casting, glazing). There are some materials available for glass - slumping and stained glass working. If you would like to work in glass please get in touch with the office prior to your residency, to ensure we can cater to your needs.
Equipment available to use in the Ceramic Workshop:
- One small kiln
- One larger front loading kiln, with chemical extraction
- One electrical wheel
- Two pedal wheels
The purpose-built foundry has facilities for mould-making and casting white metals, bronze and iron. The foundry is a training facility and artists are encouraged to engage with all stages of the process. Please bear in mind when applying to use the foundry that metal casting is a labour intensive process.

SSW has a resources room available to all artists. There is a small library, as well as computers available for artists use. There is a dedicated computer with Adobe and Final Cut programmes.

SSW can host up to 10 artists in our recently refurbished, comfortable self-catering accommodation, either on site or in our house in Lumsden village. Wireless internet is available in the rooms on site, and in the main SSW building. On site is a large kitchen-dining room in 'the bothy', and a small lounge area with video library.

Travel - Getting Here
SSW is based on the A97 between Huntly and Alford in Aberdeenshire. There is an international airport in Aberdeen, and train and bus connections from Aberdeen and Inverness. The nearest train station to SSW is Huntly. From Huntly there is a limited bus service, or alternatively you can book a taxi (local taxi companies include JJ Watt, Deveron Taxi's, V&R Taxis). Occassionally an SSW member of staff may be able to assist you with travel from Huntly to SSW, in which case we ask for a £10 donation towards fuel expenses.
