The SSW internship programme encompasses the opportunity to provide a residency program to an experienced BA/MA graduate in ceramics. The residency is two months in duration during Spring/Summer, with one placement available per year.
The residency offers an emerging artist the opportunity to develop their portfolio of work with critical and curatorial support, as well as the experience of running studio facilities, outreach workshop days and working alongside ceramic/glass artists in running courses. We are also looking for individuals who have an interest in alternative firing practices and glaze applications.
The residency offers:
– A stipend of £200/per month – Self-catering accommodation – Use of facilities – Up to six firings of the ceramics/glass flat – bed kilns (further firings will be charged at cost)
In return the resident would be expected to:
-Dedicate 16 hours per week towards the smooth running of the ceramics studio, working alongside our Ceramics technician – Develop studio practice and a new body of work – Look after the ceramic and glass facilities (with assistance from the SSW Senior Technician) – Set-up community and outreach days – Liaise and assist with the ceramic courses run at SSW by outside instructors.
Residents will need to provide their own materials (available through SSW at cost). Assistance will be given to find an external exhibition venue for the work created while in residence.
Facilities: As well as a large communal studio space, we have a room dedicated to fabrication and kiln rooms with a small electric kiln and a ceramics kiln, two wheels and a plastic vacuum former.
Duration: two months
Places: one per year.

Criteria: this residency is to provide support to a ceramics artist, looking to develop their portfolio of work and gain further experience of running studio facilities, and to work with SSW in developing the ceramics programme in line with mutual ceramics exploratory interests
Eligibility: open to a graduate from MA Ceramics or related course, with experience of working within a ceramics studio and/or teaching
Stipend: £200 per month, plus self-catering accommodation, studio access and up to six kiln firings
