Mark Gubb // Profile
guitar gun-rack

My work is strongly influenced by the history and culture I have grown up with; rock music, the Cold War, alternative comedy etc; an equal fascination with the things I find so great and so terrible about the world we live in. I work in a broad range of media and am constantly searching for different ways to disseminate my work; placing the seemingly familiar in relation with the incompatible, provoking us to consider our contribution to the world we live in. I am equally interested in how work functions within an arts institution as I am in site-specific work; a particular interest being how work can retain its criticality and credibility when positioned outside of an institutional framework, a place where it is often requested to have a broader relevance to a wider audience. My interests lay in the power of the object as a vehicle for communication, whether that be a grand sculptural statement or something more temporal. Often working with triptychs and drawing on established cultural aesthetics and modes of communication, I hope that my work will provoke a wider discourse around history, culture and belief systems (personal, political, theological…), inviting us to reflect on our desire and ability to impact upon the world we inhabit.
