One for Simmone

Thursday,20th August 2009

Having failed to write a journal throughout my stay I foolishly promised Simmone I'd write one on my way out so here goes. Firstly I had a really, really great time. Workwise after briefly reminding myself why I don't get on with casting I spent the month playing in the studio with bits of acrylic mirror (conveniently available via mail order). Starting from a very vague idea generated by a photo of a previous installation I painted the studio in the style of a teenage bedroom with different gaudy colours on each wall and then made objects or assemblages which Hayley neatly described as receivers. Objects that were rendered by real space with surfaces which were mobile and unfixed. I made them to be photographs so at the end they were just disassembled so (refreshingly for me) I also managed to achieve my aim of leaving with no more stuff to store. Otherwise highlights include lying on my back in an oilworkers coat on the road with everyone, whisky and wine watching the meteor showers, coming back form Banff in the car with amazing light and a Ceilidh on the radio, watching the ladies play pool on the night out with the Glenfiditch residents, Gubb's delight at seeing soya spread on a menu in a cafe, driving into massed pipers in Dufftown, the giant inflatable slide with huge cross/mast on top, having a piece of paper glued to my forehead with Jonathan's spit alone, Gumbo, Haggis and all SSW food based events and last but not least beating Simmone at croquet. Good times indeed.
