First Memorial was made whilst an artist in residence at the Scottish Sculpture Workshop, 2007. It is a cast bronze triptich and was my first time working with metal (my artwork normally site-specific mixed media installation). I won the residency because I was keen to learn more about the techniques of sculpture, and to see how I could combine a normally conceptually based practice with traditional sculpture techniques.

First Memorial merges the form of a dead bird and an animal skull. The result is abstract with both female and male forms. The three parts sit in a circle. It describes the cycle of life and death.
