We are excited to share our Spring Community Making Space programme developed in collaboration with our Community Advisory Group and other members of our local community.

As Winter gives way to Spring, our new programme celebrates the season of growth, renewal and new beginnings within these sessions. Emerging from our winter season, which included quilting, candlemaking and garden planning, this new programme takes us into the outdoors, opens up to knowledge from other countries and furthers our community building through making.
We continue our popular Thursday Making Sessions that centre around three areas of hands-on making and co-learning – our Materials Garden, Textiles & Print and DIY skills. These run alongside our monthly Clay Socials and Easter and Summer Kids Holiday Clubs.
Materials Garden is a space at SSW for growing plants that can be used for making art together – for their colours, for their sculptural properties and for their benefit to our collective wellbeing. We’ll be focusing on planting up our new growing beds, tending to the garden and learning more about the plants we will be growing and their properties and uses across the globe. This year we’ll be working with calendula, marigold, onion, rhubarb and woad.
Textiles & Print sessions continue to explore how we incorporate local materials into our Lumsden Picnic Blanket, weaving in designs which embody our connection to place. We’ll learn the steps involved in working with local sheep wool, including carding and drop spinning, and go on to use our newly spun yarns for weaving/embroidery.
DIY Skills sessions are new for this season and provide hands-on experience in working safely with a range of essential DIY tools, improving our confidence working with tools and gaining the skills involved in building shelves, attaching with various fixtures and fittings and in tiling.
Clay Socials will continue to take place monthly on a Friday evening and offer residents of Lumsden, Honeybarrel, Mossat and Kildrummy a chance to come together and have free access to working with clay, alongside tips on a number of ceramic techniques.
Finally, we are excited to further our work with young people through our Easter and Summer Holiday Clubs, exploring their presence and representation in rural spaces through art which explores public art and making our own.
