About - Scottish Sculpture Workshop

Introduction

Scottish Sculpture Workshop (SSW) is situated at the North end of Lumsden’s Main Street. When it was established in 1979 by artist and educator, Fred Bushe it was the first sculpture-specific artist workshop to be developed in the UK.

SSW is a making and thinking facility – offering the time, space, support and facilities to artists from all backgrounds to develop their practice, with an emphasis on experimentation and exploration of sculpture within the expanded field. Through a series of curated projects, collaboration and skill exchanges between visual artists, local specialists and the wider North East community, SSW promotes a dialogue that considers our rural locale within a globalised society. The core programme of SSW is based around the facilitation of artist residencies, the delivery of projects and the provision of facilities, as well as offering open access to workshops for all.

Location

Set in the foothills of the Grampian Mountains, and a ten-minute drive from the Cairngorm National Park, Scottish Sculpture Workshop is based in the rural village of Lumsden. It has approx. 300 inhabitants, a village hall, a garage/shop/post office, and pub. It is a great base to explore the historic and prehistoric sites for which the area is renowned*.

The wider region is home to both the Castle and Whisky Trail, as well as the landmark hill of Bennachie, and the North East coast has beautiful beaches and cliff walks.

*NB: for travel in the region a car is generally required. Cars are available to hire from Inverurie, Elgin and Aberdeen.

Recruitment

SSW runs an internship programme and takes on 2-3 placements a year. All SSW employment and Board opportunities are advertised through social media and the Creative Scotland website, when positions are available.
