It has been 18 months since Scottish Contemporary Art Network (SCAN) provided us with one of their e-cargo bikes, giving our staff team, artists, and local community an easy, emission-free way to travel and transport items around the village.
Over the past year and a half, the bike has become a well-used part of life at SSW and a shared resource in and around Lumsden. It has supported everything from practical site tasks to community activities and village events.
The e-cargo bike has been used for:
- Collecting propane bottles for the raku kiln from the local garage by our technical team
- Transporting materials for our Community Making Space programme by our Communities Producer
- Being decorated and entered into the Lumsden Christmas Ride-On Rally
- Supporting local residents in setting up village events
- Weekly Community Fridge drop-offs around Lumsden
- Picking up bags of grit salt during snowy weather
- Grocery trips for visiting artists — and the occasional ride to the Kildrummy Inn (just remember to check the charge before the cycle home!)
- Moving equipment and supplies between the SSW site and our offsite accommodation
The bikes were purchased by Cycling UK’s Scotland’s Cycle Share Fund: a project funded by Transport Scotland, which provides funding for organisations to purchase cycles and equipment for shared use.
The Babboe Go Mountain Electric Cargo Trike is available for all resident artists and art workers coming to SSW to use for local errands and collections.
A big thanks to SCAN for the bike which continues to support SSW’s work to move to net zero and a greener future.
