We are delighted to announce that University of the Arts Helsinki alumni Roy Boswell has been selected for Ecologies in the Making: Sculpting Futures residency programme 2026, a joint residency with SSW and Cove Park in Argyll and Bute. Roy will be coming to SSW for 2 months, following a 2 month residency at Cove Park in Summer 2026.

Roy Boswell is a sculptor from Helsinki, they describe their work as:
Being concerned with the durational qualities of materials and combining objects with music and organised sound, performance traditions, writing, and dramaturgy. Longer lasting materials like stone are placed side by side with fast-paced materials like a song or a beam of light – and the work emerges out of the friction between the intersecting temporalities.

In response to being awarded the Ecologies in the Making: Sculpting Futures residency, Roy says:

Taking part in the residency offered by Cove Park and Scottish Sculpture Workshop in collaboration with Saastamoinen foundation and Uniarts Helsinki has been a long-term ambition of mine, and I’m absolutely delighted to have been chosen for the award. Throughout my academic career in fine art, my focus has been on the immaterial aspects of sculpture, and how these immaterialities might co-exist alongside – and as part of – objects. The residencies at Cove Park and the SSW will provide both a unique setting and an exceptional opportunity to focus fully over an extended period of time on my artistic research into the aural limits of sculpture.

Roy was selected by an expert pre-selection jury made up of curator and founder of Askeaton Contemporary Arts Michele Horrigan, Head of Visual Arts at Creative Scotland Emma Nicolson, and lecturer in sculpture and site-specific art James Prevett from the Academy of Fine Arts, University of the Arts Helsinki.

Congratulations Roy, we look forward to welcoming you to Scotland next summer!

Ecologies in the Making: Sculpting Futures Grant at Cove Park and Scottish Sculpture Workshop is supported by The Academy of Fine Arts Helsinki in partnership with Saastamoinen Foundation.
