We are glad to share that despite facing delay, construction of phase 1 of our capital development project is due to start in March 2022. Preparatory work is underway, including de-construction and salvaging of the much-loved Gang Hut, and contractors visiting the site.

Local contractors, Coldwells Build, are being appointed to complete the work, which includes the creation of a new community making space, expansion of our ceramics workshop and refurbished artists’ accommodation. Coldwells will be on site from March with building works expected to complete by July 2022. The developments are led by Collective Architecture.

Over the past few months, we have been able to support artists through Open Access in the foundry, forge, wood and metal workshops. It’s been a pleasure to be able to work with you all again, following many months of COVID-19 restrictions and challenging delays to our capital development plans.

Likewise, it has been encouraging to see our 22-23 Courses, released just last month, being positively received, with several courses fully booked already and others proving very popular. We have several open calls for residency planned in the near future, including group residency (formerly summer/winter residency) and our SSW x Counterflows Caregivers Residency. We are so looking forward to welcoming everyone back to enjoy the new accessible and functional facilities created through the redevelopment work.

Throughout March, the SSW team will be taking some time off for their health and wellbeing. With this, we are pausing Open Access bookings until mid-April. You can read more about the timelines for Open Access here. Team time off will not affect any existing bookings, but please be aware that correspondence and administration will take longer during this time.

If you are visiting or working at SSW during the capital development work please be aware that there will be limited parking and you may need to find alternative suitable parking in the village. We request that you are considerate of our neighbours’ access rights and sight lines on Main Street.
