Very sad news for all alumni of Scottish Sculpture Workshops with the news that the much loved Peter Smith passed away peacefully at home on Sunday, August, 12 2018 (age 78) after a short illness. This gentle man will be greatly missed by Angela, his family, friends and the hundreds of artists from around the World who met and were helped by him over many years here at SSW.
Peter was the workshop studios manager and chief technician from the mid 1980’s until his retirement in 2005. Residents at SSW will remember Peter as incredibly knowledgeable in all the supportive technologies needed to produce their sculpture projects. He was truly a gentle man who made great efforts to see that each resident at SSW could find the resources to develop their projects successfully. No problem was too great that a way around it wasn’t found.
On a personal note, from SSW Senior Technician Eden Jolly “Peter and I worked closely together for over 10 years until his retirement in 2005 and thinking back we seemed to spend most of the time laughing or extracting the forklift from unusual situations. Peter had a huge range of practical skills and a deep knowledge of lore and craft which he was happy to share with typical generosity and humility.”
There will be a memorial service for him in Harrogate near York where he and Angela have lived the last few years. Family flowers only. Please honour him by donating to the MacMillan Cancer Support which helped him so much in his last days.
The cremation will be on Friday, August 24, 9:40 AM, at Stonefall Crematorium, Weatherby Road, Harrogate. It will be a humanist ceremony with humanist celebrant, Sharon Kent.
If you have some thoughts you would like to be included in the ceremony, please email her at sharon@1thestables.co.uk . Afterwards there will be tea and refreshments at the Pavilion’s Hotel across the road from the ceremony. His ashes will be scattered in Scotland at a later date. Please feel free to forward this information.
