Open Again: September

Summer Residency (2019). Photo: Ki Dong Kwon

From September 2020 we are pleased to reopen the SSW site for Courses and Open Access bookings in wood, metals and cold-casting.

We have been working hard to put new measures in place to keep everyone safe. These include some physical changes to our workshops and some changes to how we work together across the site.

All of our COVID-19 safety measures have been planned with reference to the Scottish Government guidelines and an understanding of our different users’ diverse needs. As a brief overview, when you come to SSW please expect:

  • Reduced numbers of users
  • Reduced movement around the site through the use of ‘zones’
  • Physical distancing, face coverings and increased hand washing
  • Increased cleaning

With these safety measures in place we can offer access to processes in the foundry, wood workshop and metal workshop, technical support and limited accommodation. For full details on all of our COVID-19 safety measures please download our new COVID-19 Information Pack for either day users or residential users. Links for this in all formats are at the bottom of this page.

Bookings for Courses and Open Access can be made online from now. Please visit either Open Access or Courses to make a booking.

FAQs

Can you offer accommodation?
Yes! There will be accommodation available. As with the rest of our site this will be a limited number of rooms, with increased time between visitors for cleaning. If we are fully booked we can suggest other places nearby that may be available to book instead.

Are you welcoming international visitors?
Yes! Please check the Scottish Government’s most recent list of non-exempt countries before booking to see if you will need to quarantine on arrival in the UK. If you do need to quarantine we regret that you can’t do this at SSW. In addition please be aware that should there be a confirmed or suspected case at SSW you may need to self-isolate here. This would restrict your access to the workshops and may disrupt your travel plans. We recommend getting in touch via email before making a booking and we can advise you.

Will ceramics be opening again?
Yes, but not just yet. Due to the high demand for ceramics we have had to put additional measures in place and rejig the existing booking process. This is taking a bit longer to prepare than the rest of the site. Meanwhile, we are planning a new drop-off firing service and pop-up materials shop for our regular ceramics users and there are some spaces available on our ceramics courses. To find out more about our current ceramics provision, get in touch.

I have been shielding, is it safe for me to visit?
We have put every possible and realistic measure in place to keep everyone safe on site but cannot eliminate the risk of COVID-19 completely. We would advise downloading our Information Pack via the links below, take a read and evaluate your risk based on your own circumstances.

What happens if my booking is cancelled or I can’t come due to COVID-19?
Of course we cannot predict what will happen in the coming months. SSW may have to close at short notice if there is a confirmed or suspected case on site, or you may have to cancel if you become ill or have to self-isolate. In any case we will either reschedule your booking or offer a full refund. We have updated our terms and conditions for courses and open access to reflect these changes to our cancellation policy. You can download these via the links at the bottom of this page.

Will you be running residency this year?
With reduced capacities in the workshops and accommodation we will not be opening a call out for Winter Residency this year. We have some other plans in the pipeline which we hope to offer instead. Keep an eye on our social media and sign up to our newsletter to hear about these first.
