Forming part of our 40th anniversary celebrations, we invite our neighbours in Lumsden, Kildrummy and Towie to come along and try something new in our Community Making Sessions. Join us for free workshops in blacksmithing, aluminium casting and jesmonite casting for all ages and abilities, led by highly skilled artists and technicians.

Celebrating 40 years of SSW, these Community Making Sessions are a chance to share in the skills and processes available at SSW Lumsden. Each workshop will enable you to make 2 functionals objects – one for you to take home and one that forms a contribution to the future development of the site at SSW – from coat hooks to key rings and terrazzo tiles in between.

Spaces are limited and must be booked in advance. To book, phone SSW reception on 01464 861372, or pop into the office from Monday – Friday, 9:30am — 5pm.

Please note spaces are only available for people in Lumsden, Towie and Kildrummy. If you are outwith these postcodes, check out our extra sessions on Sunday 3 November.

Blacksmithing | 10am – 1pm | Ages 16+
Learn how to forge hooks for hanging coats, towels or foundry leathers! The 3 hour session is led by artist Uist Corrigan with SSW Trainee Technician Michael Hautemulle, and covers the basics of drawing out, hammering and bending mild steel bar, shaping it into a hook of your design.

Terrazzo Tiles | 10am – 1pm | Suitable for all ages, children under 16 should be supervised by an adult
Cast hexagonal tiles from jesmonite with artist Claire Baily. Using cold casting techniques, combine materials collected from the SSW site to experiment with surface, texture and colour and make unique tiles for splashbacks, table tops or coasters.

Aluminium casting | 10am – 1pm | Suitable for all ages, children under 16 should be supervised by an adult
Make cast aluminium keyrings in the SSW foundry with SSW Lead Technician, Eden Jolly. Learn how to make a simple pattern and basic mould, before assisting our technicians on an aluminium pour, casting your moulds with molten metal.

In all workshops, you will make one for SSW and one to take home.

We have lots of activities for all ages taking place across the weekend, including a spectacular iron pour, party and artists’ workshops among other events. Click here to see the full programme.
