SSW x Counterflows Residency: Sholto Dobie

noise reeds based on duck calls

The SSW x Counterflows residency is a new residency programme which focuses on DIY cultures, improvisation and practices that fall between discipline boundaries. Work and ideas developed through the time, space and support of residency at SSW will go on to be shared at our annual open weekend, the Lumsden Weekender, and at Counterflows Festival in Glasgow.

The selected artist for this year’s programme, Sholto Dobie, has been on residency at SSW over the last month. Below he shares some of his research and preparations in the run up to his performance, Hoolie-gool-oo-oo, at the Lumsden Weekender on the 4 November 2018.

Greetings from Dean’s Shortbread factory in Huntly, where I’m in the cafe, putting together some things from my stay at the Scottish Sculpture Workshop so far.

first came across the authors essay Laughing at the Spirits in North Siberia in e-flux journal, a lot of interesting stuff about learning, dreaming, language and knowledge. Also checked out James Rushford’s great essay Musical Silhouette: resemblance, trace, occlusion, self-portraiture.
