Situated next to our metal fabrication workshop, in our multi-purpose yard,  we have a new wood-fueled forge and blacksmithing area situated under a covered canopy.  Equipment includes: 3x anvils mounted at various heights, blacksmiths’ vice and assorted tongues hammers and various swage blocks. Our forge area is supported by skilled freelance technicians. You can access the forge through:Group Residency

SSW has simple shared accommodation on site as well as a house in the village. When you stay at SSW you will have a private bedroom, with access to a shared kitchen and bathroom. The studio at SSW is a bright, warm space. It is a shared studio which encourages conversation and cross-overs, between residency artists and open access artists. The studio has several large desks, but can be set up depending on the group’s requirements. There is 24 hour access to the studio for residents. The SSW Communities Room is a warm and bright flexible space, with wifi, a projector and kitchenette. Housing the SSW Library, an eclectic selection of artists’ books, catalogues, reference books and the Frontiers in Retreat Edge Effects library, the space is great for solo research and writing and can be configured as required. In our metal workshop we can offer a range of metal working processes such as Mig and Tig welding, Angle grinding, drilling, plasma cutting, Oxy/Acetylene cutting and hot and cold bending.   With a focus on experimentation and skills development we can support making in many forms – from small scale armatures and maquettes through to the fabrication of larger scale steel sculptures.
