Thursday 27 June
Plant Life in Lumsden with Cait from Cults Croft
11 am – 1 pm
Join us as we take a tour of the flora and fauna of Lumsden learning about some of the historical and current uses of the plants as well as how the changing environment is affecting the local landscape. The session will take the form of a walk, draw and talk led by Cait from Cults Croft with plenty of opportunities to also share your own knowledge of the area and make sketches of motifs to print with the following week.
Thursday 4 July
Screenprinting and Appliqué workshop with Keng Keng Tang
11 am – 1 pm
Come and join us for a screenprinting and appliqué workshop led by artist Keng Keng Tang. During this session we will start to work on the communal picnic blanket for Lumsden using stencils, stitching, and printing to create patches using designs based on local motifs. Keng Keng will also speak about her recent project undertaken as part of the SSW X Counterflows Caregivers residency during which she created a sound-quilt based on ideas of home, safety and belonging.
Thursday 11 July
Embroidery Techniques with Jane Ronie
11 am – 1 pm
Join Jane in interpreting your experiences and sightings of Lumsden flora and fauna to inspire new stitching patterns. She will demonstrate various embroidery techniques from simple running stitches and backstitches through to blanket, feather and decorative knots. There will also be opportunity to head out to the nearby woods to collect inspiration for your designs.

Furthering Applique, Embroidery and Screenprinting with Jane Ronie
11 am – 1 pm
Building on the skills and learning of the past 3 sessions you will have a chance to work with scale and text to further your knowledge of textile design. Jane and Mara will be on hand to support you and to help to refine your techniques. This session is designed to help you feel confident and inspired in your stitching journey.

Cyanotype on Fabric with Mara Marxt Lewis
11 am – 1 pm
We will explore the world of cyanotype, a historic photographic printing process, in this hands-on session. Guided by Mara, you’ll learn how to harness the sun’s rays to create stunning blue-toned prints on fabric. Embracing the natural elements, we invite you to experiment with found objects and local flora to produce one-of-a-kind textile artworks.
Thursday 15 August
Natural Dyeing with Mara Marxt Lewis
11 am – 1pm
Explore the vibrant world of natural dyes at this hands-on session. Learn to extract rich, earthy colours from local plants and foods like onion skins, dandelions, and nettles. Mara will guide you through the process of preparing the dyebaths and fabric as we uncover the ancient art of botanical dyeing. This session will focus on dying raw threads and strings to incorporate into the future sessions.
Thursday 22 August
Eco Printmaking with Ferns with Claire Rayner
11 am – 1 pm
Join us to learn this sustainable dyeing technique using locally foraged ferns. Together, we’ll learn more about ferns followed by bundling and steaming them to transfer their patterns onto fabric and paper.

The final two sessions are a chance to continue practicing and sharing your textile skills followed by a cooked lunch and access to the Lumsden Community fridge.

All sessions and related materials are free and homemade food and refreshments are provided. No previous experience in working in any of the above materials necessary. Inductions will be provided at the start of each session.
