The Mid Week Make – Spring/Summer 2026

The Mid Week Make is an evening programme that takes place on Wednesdays from 6-8pm and brings people together to experiment with creative materials, try new processes and spend time making alongside one another. This season’s sessions explore a range of processes including making cordage using natural fibres and plant materials to woodblock printing, wheel throwing and glass fusing through relaxed, hands-on sessions led by artists and local makers.

No experience is needed and all materials, food and refreshments are provided.

Making and Working with Cordage with Helen Jackson

Wednesday 27 May, 6-8pm

Join artist Helen Jackson for an introduction to making cordage, threads and string using natural fibres and locally gathered plant materials. During the session, participants will learn techniques for making cordage by hand and explore how it can be looped and shaped into three-dimensional forms such as baskets and vessels.

Introduction to Woodblock Printing with Anupa Gardner*

Wednesday 3 June, 6-8pm

Artist and printmaker Anupa Gardner will introduce participants to woodblock printing through carving techniques using a range of tools and processes. Participants will have the opportunity to carve their own wooden printing blocks and experiment with printing using their carved pieces.

*Please note the woodblock printing session with Anupa Gardner is the same session repeated twice to allow the workshop to run in smaller group sizes. Participants should only attend one session. When booking, it would be helpful to let us know which date(s) you are available to attend and, if you have a preference, which session you would ideally like to join.

Introduction to Throwing on the Wheel*

Wednesday 10 June
Session 1: 5-7pm
Session 2: 7-9pm

Join SSW Communities Producer Jo Northedge for an introduction to throwing on the pottery wheel. During the session, participants will learn the basics of wheel throwing and experiment with shaping clay into simple ceramic forms on the wheel.

*This session will run twice in smaller group sizes to allow as many participants as possible the opportunity to take part. Participants should only attend one session. When booking, it would be helpful to let us know which session time(s) you are available to attend and, if you have a preference, which session you would ideally like to join.

Glass Fusing Part 1 with Hazel MacLennan*

Wednesday 17 June, 6-8pm

Join us for a two-part introduction to glass fusing led by glass artist Hazel MacLennan. Over the two sessions, you’ll be guided through the key techniques needed to design, cut, and assemble glass.There will be plenty of time to experiment with the materials and techniques, before bringing everything together to design and make your own colourful glass coasters to take home.

* This workshop runs over two sessions, and you’ll need to be able to attend both dates to take part. Please ensure you request to attend both sessions when booking.

Glass Fusing Part 2 with Hazel MacLennan

Wednesday 1 July, 6-8pm

Participants will continue developing work started in the first session while exploring further glass fusing techniques and processes with Hazel MacLennan.

Handbuilding for Raku Firing

Wednesday 8 July, 6-8pm

Join SSW Communities Producer Jo Northedge for an introduction to ceramic handbuilding techniques. Participants will create clay forms intended for a future raku firing while experimenting with shape, texture and surface.

Booking:

The Mid Week Make sessions are open to all above the age of 10 years old. Children and young people must be accompanied by their parent/ caregiver.
