Community Making Space Winter Programme 2024/25

We are excited to share our Winter Community Making Space Programme developed in collaboration with our Community Advisory Group and other members of our local community.

In many other northern places Winter is seen as a time to rest and renew –  responding to the short days and long nights we experience. The season invites us to slow down and recharge, to find new routines and to spend time in the company of one another. Nature too changes its rhythm during the Winter – the trees around us conserve their energy and animals hibernate and stock up on food – to ensure that when the springtime comes, all are ready to be their best selves. We’ve been inspired by this way of embracing Winter, and together with our community co-designed the Community Making Space programme to celebrate this season together.

Our Winter programme continues with our Thursday Making Sessions that centre three areas of hands-on making and co-learning; Textiles and Print, A Materials Garden and Self Care as Community Care alongside our ever popular Clay Socials that take place monthly.

Within Textiles and Print sessions we’ll be continuing to make the Lumsden Picnic Blanket, weaving in new designs based upon local flora and fauna, and adding our own words and poetry. We’ll explore techniques for assembling the blanket including Quilting and Applique.

We’re excited to start exploring the idea of a Materials Garden this winter. During these sessions we’ll explore what a Materials Garden at SSW could look like, learn about how to design the space and get hands-on with natural elements which we can grow, later process and go on to work with.

Self Care as Community Care celebrates the importance and power of taking care of ourselves so that we can be in positions to help take care of our community. We often feel happiest when we’re a part of a community, and our community is strongest when we ourselves are fulfilled. We’ll gather together for activities which combine learning new skills with relaxing and coming together.

Finally, we will continue our monthly Clay Socials which take place in the evening and offer residents of Lumsden, Honeybarrel, Mossat and Kildrummy a chance to come together and get free access to our ceramics workshop and materials alongside tips on a number of ceramic techniques.

Our Community Making Space Winter Programme is free and open to everyone. No experience necessary.
