Capital Development survey: Artists

In 2019 we were excited to announce our ambitions for a major capital development project at SSW, to upgrade our workshop spaces and site. In line with our ethos, the development will see a ‘ground-up’ approach at its heart, using local materials, skills and knowledges. It will foreground function and environmental sustainability throughout the design and construction. Accommodation

SSW has simple shared accommodation on site as well as a house in the village. When you stay at SSW you will have a private bedroom, with access to a shared kitchen and bathroom. We allocate rooms randomly and based on availability, unless you let us know of any access needs. Staying on site There are four bedrooms on site, accessed via a steep flight of stairs. Studio

The studio at SSW is a bright, warm space. It is a shared studio which encourages conversation and cross-overs, between residency artists and open access artists. The studio has several large desks, but can be set up depending on the group’s requirements. There is 24 hour access to the studio for residents. Communities Room

The SSW Communities Room is a warm and bright flexible space, with wifi, a projector and kitchenette. Housing the SSW Library, an eclectic selection of artists’ books, catalogues, reference books and the Frontiers in Retreat Edge Effects library, the space is great for solo research and writing and can be configured as required.
