Our last SSW X Counterflows Resident Artist was Hang Linton and their family, who we were really happy to welcome in August 2021.
Hang got involved with many of the facilities and materials available in the workshops, engaging in their residency in a way which was playful and exploratory. A massive thank you to Hang, Laura, Ros & Cyd [CHECK WITH HANG THAT NAMING THEM IS OK] for visiting – we wish you the best for 2022!
One month strong at Scottish Sculpture Workshop. Thank you so much everyone for hosting me and my family, providing us with the space and support to dive into processes and create. As with everything in life, it’s a big work in progress.
I spent the month diving into the concept of time, deconstructing clocks, finding the symbols and imagery that resonate with me. Spirals, balance springs and escapements stood out. I spent days trawling through the library, finding images and information. Researching on the internet, trying to find out what aspects of nature linked to the images I had found. Time has a deep connection to spirituality, spirals and rotations, the universe provides us with what we need and if we miss an opportunity it comes back round in a different form as we grow in time. I was interested in what it means to ‘clock watch’ and how I had spent hours of my life doing this while working under capitalist structures.
I found myself struggling to pinpoint what it is I actually wanted to work on until I had a conversation with Zoë. I found that through discussing ideas, laying out what I had already done, I was encouraged to explore and remove the importance of the outcome. We discussed what it meant to be under the ‘masters time’ and Zoë informed me of Black Quantum Futurism and that in just deconstructing a clock I was already doing right.
Away I went, inspired to create and place new purpose into old ideas. I started exploring metal, wood and ceramics, listening and learning in the process. Each conversation with Beth, the senior technican and Michael, instilled me with the skills, ideas and courage to go on a journey that will continue to unwind over time.
From reading into Black Quantum Futurism, creating strange, time inspired objects and thinking about my ancestry, I’ve got a grand plan in the back of my mind to create a post-apocalyptic TIME temple from a new culture on a different/distant timeline. But that’s for another moment x hope you enjoy my creations 👁 Keep your eyes on the future and your heart in the present 👁 here is how I made a bell…
